The novelist Thomas Harris developed the character of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Serial killer Hannibal Lecter feeds his victims. He was a respected forensic psychiatrist before his capture, and after his prison, FBI agents Clarice Starling and Will Graham contact him to assist them discover other serial killers.
In Harris's 1981 thriller Red Dragon, Lecter made his debut as a villain in a minor role. Manhunter (1986), starring Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter, was based on the novel. The Silence of the Lambs (1988) included a larger part for Lecter, and Anthony Hopkins earned an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 1991 film adaption. Hopkins played Lecter again in a 2001 adaptation of the 1999 novel Hannibal, in which he eludes arrest, and in a 2002 version of Red Dragon.
Hannibal Rising (2006), the fourth novel in the series, delves into Lecter's upbringing and growth as a serial killer. Gaspard Ulliel portrayed him in the 2007 film adaption. Mads Mikkelsen portrays Lecter in the NBC television series Hannibal (2013–2015), which focused on his connection with Graham. Mikkelsen earned a Saturn Award for his performance.
The
American Film Institute rated Lecter (as portrayed by Hopkins) the
greatest villain in American cinema in 2003. He was voted one of the 100
greatest characters of the previous 20 years by Entertainment Weekly in
2010.
