The billionaire
founder of Patagonia has given his company away to help fight the
climate crisis. Rather than selling the company, Yvon Chouinard, his
wife and two adult children have transferred their ownership of
Patagonia, valued at about $3 billion, to a trust and a nonprofit
organization dedicated to combating climate change. Chouinard, who
started the outdoor apparel brand almost 50 years ago, wrote, "We needed
to find a way to put more money into fighting the crisis." Patagonia's
website now reads, "Earth is now our only shareholder."
