The day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, President Franklin D. Roosevelt
appeared before a joint session of Congress and declared, “Yesterday,
December 7, 1941–a date which will live in infamy–the United States of
America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces
of the Empire of Japan.” Roosevelt asked Congress to approve a
resolution recognizing the state of war between the U.S. and Japan.
Within an hour of the speech, Congress passed a declaration of war
against Japan which officially brought the U.S. into World War II.
