A light year is the distance that light travels in one year through empty space. A light year is around 10 trillion kilometers since the speed of light is about 300,000 kilometers per second (about 186,000 miles per second) (about 6 trillion miles). A light year is a very short period of time.
Because the cosmos is so vast, the light year is utilized in astronomy. Stars and galaxies may be hundreds, thousands, or millions of light years away from us.
Consider a star that is 100 light
years away from us on Earth. It takes 100 years for light from the star
to reach us. When we view the light of a star, we see it as it was 100
years ago.
