Queen Isabella I

Christopher Columbus asked King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella of Spain to sponsor his voyage of exploration. Queen Isabella refused Columbus at first but eventually agreed to sponsor the voyage. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gave Columbus three ships, a crew of about ninety men, and some money. The voyage led to the opening of the New World and to the establishment of Spain as the first global power which dominated Europe and much of the world for more than a century.
