The Wadsworth Atheneum, located in Hartford, Connecticut, is the oldest
public art museum in the U. S. It was founded in 1842 by Daniel
Wadsworth, an amateur artist, architect, and patron of the arts who was
heir to a fortune created by his merchant father. In an unusual move for
the time, Wadsworth focused on collecting and promoting American
painting, including a young artist named Thomas Cole — later known as
the founder of the Hudson River School.
