Around the World in 80 Days is a 1956 American epic adventure comedy film directed by Michael Todd and starring David Niven and Cantinflas and distributed by United Artists.
Michael Anderson directed the film, which was produced by Mike Todd, with Kevin McClory and William Cameron Menzies serving as associate producers. James Poe, John Farrow, and S.J. Perelman wrote the script, which was based on Jules Verne's famous 1873 book of the same name. Victor Young created the music soundtrack, while Lionel Lindon shot the Todd-AO 70 mm photography (in Technicolor). Award-winning designer Saul Bass designed the film's six-minute animated title sequence, which is displayed at the conclusion.
The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, which it won.
The picture has an all-star cast, with David Niven and Cantinflas playing Fogg and Passepartout, respectively. In contrast to his master's severe formality, Fogg is a traditional Victorian upper-class English gentleman, well-dressed, well-spoken, and highly punctual, but his servant Passepartout (who has an eye for the women) provides most of the comedic relief as a "jack of all trades" for the picture. Shirley MacLaine, in her last appearance, plays the lovely Indian Princess Aouda, while Robert Newton, in his final role, plays the determined but inept Detective Fix.
More than 40 great actors, including Marlene Dietrich, Ronald Colman, Noel Coward, George Raft, and Frank Sinatra, make short cameo cameos.
